Foodservice Technology Center

The Foodservice Technology Center at the CTAC Energy Center in Irwindale offers customers a complete commercial kitchen that fully demonstrates how to improve the energy efficiency of your Foodservice operation. With over sixty pieces of highly efficient, electric cooking equipment, customers can observe cooking demonstrations, or test equipment they're considering to purchase. The center has induction cook tops, griddles, fryers, steamers, ice machines, refrigeration, and ovens on display and for testing. The Foodservice center also exhibits the efficiency advantages of demand ventilation controls (DVC) for hoods and energy management systems, and the latest in high-efficiency lighting and HVAC systems.

Energy Management System (EMS)

An Energy Management System can maximize your Foodservice operation as it monitors and controls refrigerators, freezers, cooking equipment, lighting and air conditioners, providing energy and money saving benefits. The system sounds an alarm when it identifies problems that affect energy usage, food quality, safety, service and customer comfort. SCE's pays rebates on qualified Energy Management Systems.

Connectionless/Boilerless Steamers

These steamers have been tested in the Foodservice Technology Center and are proven to use less energy and water than other gas or electric steam technologies. Energy-efficient EnergyStar® qualified steamers can save up to 11,160 kWh and use up to 90% less water annually than standard models. This equates to a savings of nearly $1,500 on the electric bills and $1,000 on the water bills. $750 rebates are available for qualified steamers.

Combi-Oven

By combining the benefits of steam and hot air convection, the combi-oven offers better quality, versatility and energy efficiency than traditional systems. The combi-oven is also space saving and can cook many different menu items. It is used in cooking demonstrations in the classroom and for testing products for commercial/industrial customers who want to learn about the energy efficiency and cooking features of this equipment. $1,000 rebates are available for qualified combi-ovens.

Hood Demand Ventilation Controls (DVCs)

DVC systems control the speed of hood exhaust and makeup air fans by using variable frequency drives (VFD) to reduce hood energy consumption during idle periods. When Foodservice equipment is in “idle” mode, the system responds by cycling down the fan motors. Qualified systems are eligible for rebates of up to $350 per exhaust Horsepower (HP).

Induction Ranges & Woks

In addition to being safer and cleaner than other systems, induction equipment enables quick, efficient cooking, without heating the kitchen — making it more comfortable for workers and reducing air conditioning and ventilation needs.

Demonstration and Testing Center

The Foodservice Technology Center is where you can test and observe energy efficient equipment before you make that important decision to purchase. The center is stocked with rebate information, technical and fact sheets, and qualified lists of equipment eligible for rebates – plus success stories from customers who have put these technologies to work for them. You can tour the center, attend a seminar or equipment demonstration, or check out equipment test results by calling (800) 336-2822 for an appointment; or, register for a class at www.sce.com/energycenters.
