Technology Resource Incubator
Outreach (TRIO) Program
The Technology Resource Incubator Outreach Program (TRIO) is designed to nurture new innovative technologies from universities and investor firms through symposiums, training and support services. Participants will receive information to help understand the utility environment and tools necessary to develop cost effective energy efficiency, demand response and other Integrated Demand Side Management (IDSM) technologies or programs. By providing this information and tools, TRIO will help speed the availability of new innovative technologies and products to the IDSM realm.
TRIO is a statewide program offered by California’s investor-owned utilities and led by Southern California Edison.

What You’ll Receive
Through TRIO, you will receive valuable information as well as tools necessary to develop cost-effective energy efficiency and IDSM technologies or programs. TRIO provides this information in the form of quarterly symposiums and roundtables designed specifically to help you gain the necessary perspective and tools to work with the California IOUs.
Typical symposium scope includes:
- Understanding the California Public Utilities Commission’s long term strategic plan for energy
- Assessing the viability of emerging technologies
- Understanding various IOU relationships
- Keynote speakers from within the industry
- Current incentive programs available statewide through each IOU
- Statewide solicitation process
- Integrated Demand Side Management
- Energy Efficiency
- Demand Response
Symposium attendees can then participate in roundtable sessions, held separately from the symposiums. Roundtable scope includes:
- 3rd-party solicitations
- Work papers development
- Portfolio gap
- Current incentive programs
Who Can Participate
The TRIO program is targeted toward entrepreneurs, investors and university tech transfer offices.
Symposiums are first-come, first-served registration due to limited seating. If the list is full, you will be added to the waiting list
Eligibility for roundtable events is limited to participants that have attended the most recent symposium event. Registration is first-come, first-served due to limited seating. If the symposium or roundtable is completely booked, you will be added to the waiting list.
These are FREE events. However, all attendees are responsible for their own hotel and travel accommodations.
Easy to Participate
Southern California Edison is hosting the next TRIO Symposium at USC on June 7, 2012. Mark your calendars and register below to secure a spot!
The California Investor Owned Utilities continue to offer excellent opportunities to learn and understand how to work with the IOUs on the integration and commercialization of your energy efficiency or demand response technology:
Network and take part in discussions about:
- The utility company's process for adoption of Energy Efficiency (EE) and Demand Response (DR) technology?
- How to engage with utility companies for assessing your technology, including field tests?
- How to qualify for or benefit from utility programs such as rebates and incentives?
- How to bid and win a utility company's third party solicitation?
- The role of third party implementers and how they can help you in commercial adoption of your technology?
- How investors can use utility company resources to assess opportunities?
- How to find the right people to talk to about utility company technology needs?
Then you need to attend this up-coming TRIO Symposium, because all these and other questions will be answered by utility company representatives from SCE, PG&E, Sempra and SMUD: the four largest utility companies in the state of California, and for some, the country.
The event will be held at the University of Southern California, Davidson Executive Conference Center on June 7, 2012 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with ample time to network with IOU representatives, investors and other attendees.
This free event is a must attend for key stakeholders including entrepreneurs, investors, technology transfer officers, researchers, and other professionals interested in energy efficiency and demand response technology.
