Meter Data Management Agent
A Meter Data Management Agent (MDMA) is an entity that has qualified to read meters, validate meter data, and estimate missing data to make available to others for use in various applications as defined by the CPUC. A qualified MDMA may collect raw meter data using any of the following meter reading technologies:
- Physical on-site meter probing process
- Modem technology, a dedicated telephone line connected remote interface
- Radio technology
- Pager technology
The responsibilities of the MDMA are to collect customer usage data, and then validate the actual data for errors and irregularities. Once the data has been validated the MDMA passes the data through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to post usage to the MDMA server. This data is presented as a bill to the customer by the contracted Electric Service Provider (ESP).
If data is unable to be collected or faulty data has been obtained, it would be the responsibility of the MDMA to distinguish these circumstances and estimate possible theoretical customer usage based on their historical usage totals. This type of data is also passed through EDI and posted to the MDMA server.
Data is posted to the MDMA server by the MDMA on monthly read cycles.
The read cycles are determined by the SCE territory meter reading schedule. Data not posted, not received through EDI, or a change in meter information is reported through the SCE Metering and Data Exception Notification (MADEN) desk.
