Workforce Education and Training - Connections

SCE’s Workforce Education and Training programs are comprised of several independent programs that, together, offer a comprehensive educational package for students. Funded by or coordinated with statewide investor owned utilities (Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, San Diego Gas & Electric, and Southern California Gas), these programs were developed to be flexible and effective across diverse learning environments, to empower students to become advocates of smart energy management in their homes, schools and communities, and to prepare them for the sustainable careers that will help meet California's clean energy goals.

Workforce Education and Training programs operate within all educational sectors, from K-12 to college/university levels, and ensure the inclusion of all minority, low income, and disadvantaged communities. In addition, these programs work to match workforce skills with new workforce needs, as well as expand outreach efforts to increase awareness and demand for green careers. Through Workforce Education and Training programs, SCE is leading the way to sustaining an energy-efficient and energy-aware California.

SCE is sustaining California’s energy efficiency and demand side energy education and training through these exciting programs:

Green Campus (University)

A student-driven energy efficiency workforce education and training program that generates actual energy savings, and trains the next generation of energy efficiency professionals. Since 2004, the program has expanded to 16 campuses throughout California, including community colleges, and employs approximately 70 student interns each year. The Alliance to Save Energy's Green Campus Program is funded by the ratepayers of California under the auspices of SCE, PG&E, and Sempra Energy.

Developing Energy Efficiency Professionals (Community College)

DEEP is an employment development program that trains and educates California Community College students in the areas of energy efficiency and demand side reduction through classroom learning, projects, and outreach within the campus community. Along with preparing students for green careers, the program will produce reductions in operational costs for California Community Colleges by promoting the understanding of demand response, resource conservation, and carbon emission reduction.

Green Schools (K-12)

A comprehensive program for K-12 schools that educates students about energy and its link to the environment, promotes energy-conserving habits, encourages green careers, and saves school districts money on energy costs. Through integrative, hands-on learning activities, the Green Schools program influences students, teachers, and school staff, who then become energy educators and efficiency advocates, spreading the energy efficiency and conservation message throughout their school, homes, and community.
